Inspiration of Early Christians and the Holy Spirit's Involvement

Here is a question to ponder. How much direction did the Holy Spirit give to early Church leaders? For example, did the Holy Spirit (or God) tell Paul what to say in nearly every situation or was Paul so exceptional that he was able to do God’s work through the faith that he had acquired?

Clearly, there are specific instances where the Holy Spirit directed Paul, because it is stated that way in scripture. But, there are many other cases where Paul took bold strides and there is no indication that “God was whispering in his ear.”

What do you all think?
