Ray, I don't qualify as a Filipino, but I've been able to visit the Philippines a couple of times, and ridden a few tricycles. A tricycle is a motorcycle, usually a small one with a two cycle engine, maybe about 125 cc, that has a side car welded to the frame. The side car is usually wide enough to squeeze two in if they're not too big, and often carries several more than two. Seat padding is minimal, and there is usually no particular shock-absorption, so the ride can be pretty rough. Tricycles are cheaper to own and operate than cars, and they can fit through tight spots. They often smoke a lot and are very noisy. They are used for transport in rural areas, but mostly in the cities, and especially on Mindinao and Palawan, it seemed to me.
