Something to ponder, and pray about

I haven't read the article yet but we got this e-mail on campus today.

Colleagues:

I'm just looking for information, possibly for some later stories we will do
for TV16 at Harding.

I've always been a person to jump for ways to make the Bible easier to read
and understand. The NIV has been one of my favorites, even though some
believe there are inaccuracies in the translation. My conclusion, several
years ago, is that the problems that exist with the NIV are not
foundational, and are usually the product of differences of opinion in the
translation.

That said, I am concerned about the "Today's New International Version"
(TNIV) published by Zondervan. It is an update of the NIV, but will use
"gender-neutral" wording in order to make the Bible more readable for
present generations. The TNIV will go on sale in April.

Some say this new translation tries to change God's Word to accommodate the
present age, which is concerned with "inclusiveness" and "tolerance."

I was wondering if any of YOU (especially those in the knowledge/use of
translation languages) had inside information on what should be our
reaction/judgment of this version.

If you are interested in reading the opinion of the publisher, go to the web
address http://www.tniv.info. At that site, you can request your own free
copy of the TNIV to decide for yourself! And, if you want to give them your
opinion, for what it's worth, send an email. Maybe collective opinions will
have an effect. (To send an e-mail click on "Feedback.")

By the way, Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes" broadcast tonight will
discuss the gender-neutral Bible controversy (8:00 p.m., our time).

The article listed in this link is worthy of careful consideration. I came across it while reviewing other articles on the same site regarding an upcoming revision of the NIV. I use the NIV more than any other version, and value it highly, but also see many defects in it, many of which are touched on by the author of the linked article. The problem I have is recommending a "better" translation than the NIV. I really agree with the author of the linked article, that we currently have void that needs to be filled. Consider the thoughts, and consider praying for a better translation to meet the needs of the English speaking church and evangelism in the 21st century.
