A simple and direct answer is that Jesus was Jewish, born of the tribe of Judah. Culturally, he was Galilean. Rom 1:3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, (NASU) 2 Tim 2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel, (NASU) Rev 5:5 and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals." (NASU) And see Matthew 1 for his legal patrilineage (through Joseph) and Luke 323-38 for his human forebears, both lineages converging at King David (or diverging from King David). The Matthew account is the ancestry of Joseph, Jesus' legal father, verifying his right to David's throne. The Luke account is the actual list of his male ancestors prior to Joseph (which is to say, Mary's patrilineage). As a Galilean Jew Jesus would have surely had the complexion and general features of the Mediteranean peoples in that region of the world. |
