The particular report, about Natalie Portman, sounds like she wasn't exploiting her celebrity status, and sounds like she gave a sensible response to a very misleading article about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. But her response was only picked up and reported on because she is a celebrity, not because of it's quality, and that's the unfortunate thing, I agree. Ted Dansen, Martin Sheen, or Christopher Reeve shouldn't have any louder voice than any other citizen on matters of politics or ethics, but they do because of their star power, not because of any expertise or particular good sense. Of all the passages that address this human tendency to popularize and idolize, the one that strikes me as most pertinent is that which celebrates the opposite, the people God pays attention to.
