Recently while look for ideas for a VBS program based on Ps. 100:3 (we are his people and the sheep of his pasture) I came across a sermon by Spurgeon that was an exposition of Ps. 23-24. In the opening he suggested that Ps. 22 relates to Jesus the Good Shepherd (who knows, calls, and lays down his life for the sheep), Ps. 23 relates to Jesus the Great Shepherd (who is victorious over death and has the enduring power to save and care for his flock), and Ps. 24 reflects Jesus the Chief Shepherd whose reward os with him (see John 10 for the Good Shepherd, Hebrews 13:20-21 for the Gread Shepherd and 1 Peter 5:1-5 for the Chief Shepherd). I hadn't particularly given any thought to the nomenclature before of good-great-chief, but see that in context, there is a distinctive sense to the ideas being expressed in the use of each term, consitent of course with Old Testament imagery.
