Early Christian Symbols

Someone recently said that early Christians did not use the cross as their symbol because it was a shame, that it would be like using a swastika as our symbol today; but they used the anchor as their symbol.

I've looked around a little, and can find several things used as symbols by early Christians, including the fish and the anchor. One place mentioned that the anchor was used during ?persecution because along with the anchor being a Christian symbol, the cross symbol could be hidden in it.

Does anyone have more information about early Christian symbols?
