On the genetics, folks have speculated on genetic components for homosexuality and adultery and everything else that might be questionable (or noble) behavior, and the guesses and assertions will continue to be made. In a sense we haven't gotten much past the medieval Europeans in that respect. But it is in the realm of speculation, there is no supporting evidence, and the debate about nature and nurture will continue to rage. Most likely the answers are more complex than we yet realize. But whatever those answers are, personal responsibility is still at rock bottom, however the deck got stacked.

But back to the deaf subculture, I'm not sure (maybe others have thoughts...) about the way Political Correctness has played into this. The dogma of self-esteem probably has played a part. In a way, the deaf culture is like the homosexual culture and the biker culture, and some ethnic groups, and any number of other subcultures (perhaps including at least some religious subcultures). There is always some tendency to defend our differences, and make them into badges of pride.

I know there are other factors too. If you and I have the same trait, whatever it might be, and I'm trying to accept and normalize that trait, and you do your best to change it, I'm bound to be somewhat defensive about it, because you're implying that in fact my trait is a defect (and perhaps it is). Did that make any sense?
