It makes a lot of sense, I can see why people would be defensive about any trait they have, bad or good, because it defines them somehow. I can see how deaf people, or blind people, could feel seprated especially seeing as how they would have a unique view of life. I am still vexed by how someone would try to take something like one of the senses away though.
