Punishment or consequences, it seems to me the important thing is God did it for man's benefit. When casting man out of the garden and ensuring that we die the record states: Yahweh God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he put forth his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever..." (Genesis 3:22) God is concerned that, now that man has sinned, he not be allowed to live forever in sin. Man needs to die in order to separate himself from sin: For he who has died has been freed from sin. (Romans 6:7) Even when pronouncing the curse of the ground God says ...cursed is the ground FOR YOUR SAKE. God did it for man's sake.
